In all of our reservations, our trip arranger positioned the trip as an early 13th birthday gift for Jamie. When we arrived at the Zambesi Sun, a rather modern hotel right at Victoria Falls, there was an invitation for all three of us to high tea at the Royal Livingstone Hotel. The Royal Livingstone is an excellent example of an old British colonial hotel. Comfortable sofas and chairs under slowly moving fans, attentive wait staff, gentle piano playing everything from Pachelbel Canon to As Time Goes By to Edelweiss. And of course, there was the Zambesi River rushing by in front of us. And the mist rising from Victoria Falls nearby.
And there was fabulous food: mini quiches, spicy chicken wraps, smoked salmon wraps, passed sandwiches, and, of course, racks of scones and various pastries. A huge menu of tea choices. And to top it all off, an array of mouth-watering cakes. Lovely.
We later went down to the deck in front of the hotel right up on the water and enjoyed the view of the river and Livingstone Island. We liked it so much we came back the next day for a great lunch, and viewed a zebra right by the water, kindly cropping the grass for them. It was a peaceful interlude in our ever-busy schedule.
